Types and functions of treatment agents
14 Apr 2025
Kanglibang treatment agents are chemical preparations used to improve material surface properties, optimize process or enhance product quality. Their types and functions vary depending on the application field.
The following is a classification of the types and functions of common treatment agents from the main fields of water treatment, surface treatment, industrial manufacturing, etc.:
1. Water treatment field
Flocculant
Function: Make suspended particles in water condense into larger flocs, which are easy to precipitate or filter out.
Application: sewage treatment, drinking water purification.
Scale inhibitor
Function: Inhibit the deposition of scale (such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate) on the surface of pipes or equipment.
Application: circulating cooling water system, boiler water treatment.
Corrosion inhibitor
Function: Form a protective film on the metal surface to slow down the corrosion rate.
Application: industrial cooling water system, oil field water injection.
Bactericide
Function: Kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms (such as bacteria, algae) in water.
Application: swimming pool water treatment, industrial circulating water disinfection.
Chelating agent
Function: Form a stable complex with heavy metal ions (such as iron and copper) in water to prevent deposition or corrosion.
Application: preparation of ultrapure water for the electronics industry, boiler water treatment.
2. Surface treatment field
Surfactant
Function: reduce the surface tension of liquid, enhance wetting, emulsification and dispersion properties.
Application: cleaning agent, coating, textile printing and dyeing.
Coupling agent
Function: improve the compatibility between inorganic fillers (such as glass fiber, calcium carbonate) and organic polymers.
Application: composite materials, rubber products.
Release agent
Function: form an isolation layer between the mold and the product to facilitate demolding.
Application: plastic processing, metal casting.
Rust inhibitor
Function: form a protective film on the metal surface, isolate oxygen and moisture, and prevent rust.
Application: short-term protection of metal products, mechanical processing.
3. Industrial manufacturing field
Cutting fluid
Function: cool and lubricate the tool and workpiece, reduce friction and heat, and extend the tool life.
Application: metal cutting processing.
Quenching agent
Function: control the cooling rate during metal quenching and optimize the organizational structure.
Application: heat treatment process.
Electroplating additive
Function: improve the quality of the coating (such as brightness, uniformity, corrosion resistance).
Application: electroplating process.
Degreasing agent
Function: remove grease and dirt from the metal surface to provide a clean surface for subsequent treatment (such as electroplating and coating).
Application: metal pretreatment.
IV. Other fields
Papermaking additives
Function: enhance paper strength, improve sizing effect, and control pulp filterability.
Application: papermaking industry.
Leather treatment agent
Function: soften leather, improve feel, and enhance water resistance.
Application: leather making process.
Food additives
Function: improve food quality (such as emulsification, thickening, and antiseptic).
Application: food processing.
Mechanism of action of treatment agent
Physical action: change the surface properties of materials through physical processes such as adsorption, wetting, and dispersion.
Chemical action: functional modification is achieved through chemical reactions (such as complexation, oxidation, and reduction).
Biological action: use microorganisms or enzymes to catalyze specific reactions (such as biodegradation in sewage treatment).
Precautions for selecting treatment agents
Compatibility: the treatment agent must be compatible with the substrate and process conditions.
Environmental protection: Prioritize low-toxic, degradable and environmentally friendly treatment agents.
Economic efficiency: Balance performance and cost to avoid over-treatment.
