Molding Silicone Bonding to Metals

The correct operating method for adhesives used to bond molded silicone to metals depends on multiple factors, including silicone material type, temperature, humidity and other conditions that will affect bonding performance. Below, Kanglibang, a silicone adhesive manufacturer, explains the operating procedures for several different bonding processes.

Different silicone materials require distinct operating methods, and different bonding processes call for different adhesives. Options include room‑temperature bonding, high‑temperature bonding, low‑temperature bonding, in‑mold bonding, bonding for uncured materials, bonding to metals, bonding to plastics and silicone‑to‑silicone bonding. What are the operating procedures for molded‑in bonding? We will give a brief introduction as follows.

Molded Silicone Bonding to Metals (stainless steel, iron, copper, aluminum and other hardware metals are applicable)

Method 1

First, clean the metal surface with toluene, acetone or alcohol to remove anti‑oxidation oil, grease, dust and other contaminants. For polished smooth metal surfaces, sandblasting or acid etching is recommended to roughen the surface. Second, apply adhesive KN‑300A evenly onto either the silicone or metal substrate. Assemble, fix and press the parts for 8‑12 hours.

Method 2

First, clean the metal surface with toluene, acetone or ethanol to remove anti‑oxidation oil, grease, dust and other contaminants. For polished smooth metal surfaces, sandblasting or acid etching is recommended to roughen the surface. Second, apply primer CL‑16‑3 to the silicone surface and let it sit at room temperature for 10‑15 minutes. Third, dispense a small amount of 601 adhesive onto the silicone or metal surface. Finally, attach the two substrates together and press for several seconds.

Notes:

  1. Bonds made with KN‑300A retain good flexibility, elasticity, sealing performance and weather resistance, as well as acid‑alkali resistance, with an operating temperature range of ‑60 °C to 280 °C.
  2. The combination of CL‑16‑3 primer and 601 adhesive delivers fast bonding. After treating silicone with CL‑16‑3, allow at least 10 minutes open‑time before applying a small amount of adhesive, then press the two substrates together for several seconds.
