How to use adhesive remover

28 Nov 2025

Adhesive remover is a chemical agent used to dissolve or soften adhesives, making it easy to remove residual adhesive or separate bonded objects. It is widely used in industrial production, home repair, and handicrafts.

Here are detailed instructions for its use:

Preparation Before Use
**Understand the Adhesive Type:** Different adhesives (such as instant adhesives, epoxy resins, silicone sealants, etc.) have different sensitivities to adhesive removers. Before use, it is necessary to identify the type of adhesive to select the appropriate remover. For example, instant adhesives typically use acetone-based removers, while epoxy resins may require more specialized organic solvent removers.

Check the Material of the Items: Confirm the material of the items being bonded to ensure the remover will not damage them. Some removers may be corrosive to materials such as plastics, rubber, and paint. For example, some removers can make ABS plastic brittle and have a dissolving effect on soft PVC plastics.

Prepare Protective Equipment: Adhesive removers are usually volatile and irritating. When using them, wear gloves, goggles, and a mask to avoid skin contact, eye splashes, and inhalation of harmful fumes.

Prepare tools and site: Prepare tools such as brushes, cotton swabs, and scrapers for applying the adhesive remover and cleaning up residual adhesive. Choose a well-ventilated site to perform the operation to reduce the accumulation of harmful gases.

Detailed Usage Steps

Surface Pretreatment

Surface Cleaning: Wipe the surface of the objects to be bonded with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove dust, oil, and other impurities, ensuring the adhesive releaser makes full contact with the adhesive.

Local Testing: Conduct a small-area test in an inconspicuous location to observe the effect of the adhesive releaser on the material and the adhesive. Only proceed with large-area application after confirming no adverse reactions.

Applying the Adhesive Releaser

Choose Application Method: Select the appropriate application method based on the area and location of the adhesive. For large areas of adhesive, use a brush to apply the releaser evenly; for small areas or crevices, use a cotton swab to apply the releaser precisely.

Controlling the Amount: Apply an appropriate amount of releaser to avoid waste and dripping, while insufficient application may not effectively dissolve the adhesive. Generally, covering the adhesive surface is sufficient.

Waiting for Reaction Time

Follow the Instructions: Different combinations of releasers and adhesives will result in different reaction times. Strictly follow the time specified in the product instructions. The reaction time typically ranges from a few minutes to several tens of minutes.

Observe the reaction: While waiting, observe the changes in the colloid. If the colloid begins to soften, swell, or crack, it indicates that the adhesive remover is working.

Remove the colloid
Use tools to clean: After the colloid has softened sufficiently, gently scrape it off using a scraper, plastic spatula, or similar tool. Be careful not to use excessive force to avoid scratching the surface of the item.

Repeat the process (if necessary): If the colloid cannot be completely removed in one go, apply the adhesive remover again and repeat the above steps until the colloid is completely removed.

Clean the residue
Choose a cleaning agent: After removing the colloid, adhesive remover and a small amount of colloid may remain on the surface. Choose a suitable cleaning agent based on the material of the item, such as alcohol, dish soap, or water.

Thorough cleaning: Use a clean cloth or sponge dampened with cleaning agent to wipe the surface of the item to remove residue. Then rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a dry cloth.

Usage points for different scenarios
Industrial production
Batch processing: In industrial production, it may be necessary to remove colloids from products in batches. Automated equipment, such as spraying equipment and soaking tanks, can be used to improve processing efficiency.

Safety Regulations: Strictly adhere to industrial safety regulations to ensure the safety of operators. Properly manage the storage, use, and disposal of adhesive removers to prevent safety accidents and environmental pollution.

Home Repairs
Small Area Repairs: For example, removing label adhesive from furniture or sealant from glass, choose small-package adhesive removers for convenient use and storage.

Ventilation Considerations: When using adhesive removers in a home environment, ensure good indoor ventilation to avoid harmful gases posing a risk to health.

Crafts
Precision Operation: In crafts, precise removal of adhesive from models, ornaments, etc., may be required. Use small tools, such as needles or toothpicks, along with the adhesive remover for delicate operations.

Protecting Artwork: During adhesive removal, take care to protect other parts of the artwork and prevent the adhesive remover from contacting areas that do not require treatment.
